China University of Petroleum (East China) is located in Qingdao, a coastal city, and situated in Qingdao West Coast New Area, China's ninth national-level new area. It is a key national university directly under the Ministry of Education, listed in the "211 Project" and the "985 Project Advantageous Discipline Innovation Platform". In 2022, the university successfully passed the first-round "Double First-Class" construction effectiveness evaluation with excellent results and smoothly entered the ranks of national universities in the new round of "Double First-Class" construction.

The university's disciplines cover 7 major categories, including engineering, science, economics, management, law, education, and literature. Its disciplines and majors span all fields of the petroleum and petrochemical industry, and the overall level of its main petroleum disciplines ranks among the top in China. Currently, the university has 2 national "Double First-Class" construction disciplines (Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering, Geological Resources and Geological Engineering), which also received an A+ in the fourth round of national discipline evaluation. It has 5 national key disciplines: Mineral Resources Prospecting and Exploration, Oil and Gas Well Engineering, Oil and Gas Field Development Engineering, Chemical Technology, and Oil and Gas Storage and Transportation Engineering; and 2 national key (cultivation) disciplines: Geodetection and Information Technology, and Industrial Catalysis. Nine disciplines, namely Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, Earth Sciences, Computer Science, Environment and Ecology, Social Sciences, Mathematics, and Physics, have entered the top 1% of ESI global discipline rankings, among which Engineering, Chemistry, and Earth Sciences have entered the top 1‰.
